Android, during the last I/O conference, came up with
a lot of new updates related to security and privacy that would help in
preventing theft and securing user data. Using these updates, Android seeks to
dissuade thieves from targeting its devices and increase control that users
have over their devices.
Android Theft Prevention Measures
Three levels to the said features have been
categorized for android security which would make it difficult for device theft
and also securing data of the users.
1. More Robust Factory Reset Protection:
Thieves were able to easily get around Android’s factory reset protection,
which is now considerably stronger, since they had access to the owner’s Google
Account credentials. Furthermore, disabling “Find My Device” and changing the
screen timeout require authentication of PIN or password or biometric
authentication.
2. Sensitive Settings Authentication Via
Biometrics: Changes in specific settings such as PIN
codes as well as theft protection can only be modified with the
manufacturer-installed biometric device, which can help eliminate security
threats. Such settings are pointless if a thief is able to steal your PIN, as
there is no protection against it.
3. The Theft Detection Lock Feature:
A new feature has been introduced called stealing detection lock that will
prevent a mobile device from being stolen while it is in the user’s hand
By using the built-in sensors, Android can be told
that someone is trying to take the device away. It will take the necessary
steps and lock the device.
4. Offline Device Lock: In
case the phone is offline and a thief removes internet access, Offline device
lock kicks in to further add protection to your data.
5. Remote Lock:
Another feature Android has brought in is the Remote lock. This feature allows
the user to lock their devices without logging into Find My Device. In case the
user does notremember or misplaces their Google credentials, they can lock
their screen with just their phone and a security challenge. This gives them
time to reset their google account’s details.
Android 10 and above devices as a new Google Play services update is in
progress.
Expanded Protection and Privacy
Aside from specifying theft protection, it can be said
that the aspect of privacy and the element of security will be improved in
Android version 15.
1. Google Play Protect with Live Threat
Detection: From this point forward, Google Play protect is
going to be ON in analysing behavioural signals consented by users or the apps.
If any user malicious or suspicious compliant is found in the system, the app
is likely to be flagged for review to determine whether the application is
harmful to the user or it should be disabled entirely.
2. Private Compute Core for
Privacy-Preserving Analysis: Android’s Private
Compute Core powers the live threat detection system of Android as this has
great security but does not want to compromise users’ privacy.
This functionality is expected to be added by other
manufacturers such as Pixel, Oppo, Honor, Lenovo, etc. in the near future.
3. Hiding of One-Time Passwords (OTPs):
Android 15 will not show OTPs and sends push notifications to those users that
could otherwise be targeted by spyware or scams apps further enhancing user
privacy. It will also not allow sensitive personnel details to be shared when
screen sharing is done.
4. Warding for Cellular Connectivity:
Android 15 will verify whether any network connection is not ciphered. This
stands to protect voice calls and SMS from being intercepted.
These updates reaffirm Google’s strategy for user
privacy and protection as these advancements are said to be part of Android 15
and Google Play services updates slated for this year.
